Jesus DVDJesus
Barnes & Noble - Beautifully shot in Morocco and Malta, the Emmy-nominated miniseries Jesus dramatizes the story of the humble carpenter believed by many to be the biblical Messiah. Jeremy Sisto portrays a Christ very much of this earth -- laughing, dancing, even gracefully fending off his friend Lazarus' marriage-minded daughter. But nowhere is His humanity more evident than in the warm familiarity of mother and son. Mary (Jacqueline Bisset) functions almost as a benevolent stage mom, nudging her laid-back son that "it is time" to fulfill His destiny. This stirring production conveys both the emotional lure of Jesus' compassion and the raw excitement of His miracles -- walking on the surface of a stormy sea, bringing Lazarus back to life -- that inflamed His devoted disciples. The film also shows how this alarmed the existing power structure, leading all too soon to betrayal and agonizing crucifixion at the hands of Roman governor Pontius Pilate, played by a mesmerizing Gary Oldman. Among the script's less effective contemporary touches are Mary and former prostitute Mary Magdalene (a miscast Debra Messing) bonding over the hurtfulness of men. But Jeroen Krabbé is a dazzling Satan in a business suit, tempting Christ with power and chortling at the mayhem to come: "The world at war -- what a concept!" The film ends with Jesus' triumphant resurrection from the dead, inspiring His followers to spread the teachings that have echoed through the centuries. Marlene McCampbell

The Passion of the Christ - Mel Gibson DVDThe Passion of the Christ - Mel Gibson DVD
The Passion of the Christ - Mel Gibson depicts the last 12 hours of the life of Jesus of Nazareth (Jim Caviezel), beginning with his betrayal by Judas Iscariot (Luca Lionello) and ending with his crucifixion and subsequent resurrection. Directed by Mel Gibson (BRAVEHEART)--who funded the film himself and co-wrote the screenplay--PASSION uses flashbacks to substantiate a handful of pertinent moments in Jesus' life and teachings, such as the Sermon on the Mount and the Last Supper, as well as his relationships with his mother and his disciples. Still, the drama focuses on the seemingly endless torture inflicted upon Jesus by Roman soldiers at the urging of the Jewish crowd that considers him a blasphemer, despite the attempts of a sympathetic Pontius Pilate (Hristo Naumov Shopov) to spare him from death. The faint of heart should be prepared for the brutal, barbaric beatings that Christ endures. Maia Morgenstern, Monica Bellucci, and Hristo Jivkov are touching as Mary, Magdalene, and John respectively, who are devastated by Jesus' fate yet aware that they can do nothing to change it. Performed in Aramaic and Latin with English subtitles, Gibson's labor of love is sure to prompt discussion and debate as to historical and Biblical fact.

Focusing and dramatizing the first 22 chapters in The Book of Genesis, "The Bible in the Beginning...," exquisitely and diligently explores the origins of mankind. Ten Commandments: Anniversary CollectionTen Commandments: Anniversary Collection

Jesus of Nazareth.Jesus of Nazareth
All Movie Guide - Because director Franco Zeffirelli noted publicly that he intended to depict Jesus Christ as a human being rather than a religious icon, his expensive made-for-TV miniseries Jesus of Nazareth fell victim to protestors long before its April 3, 1977 debut. Despite the pullout of several sponsors, Jesus of Nazareth was aired as scheduled, sweeping the ratings in the process. In avoiding the usual overproduced Hollywood approach to the Gospels, Zeffirelli offers one of the most sensitive and reverent portrayals of Jesus ever seen on film. In the title role, Robert Powell heads a huge international cast, which includes Olivia Hussey as Mary, Peter Ustinov as Herod, Christopher Plummer as Herod Antippas, Michael York as John the Baptist, James Farentino as Simon Peter, Donald Pleasence as Melchior, James Earl Jones as Balthazar, Ian McShane as Judas, Anne Bancroft as Mary Magdalene, Rod Steiger as Pontius Pilate, James Mason as Joseph of Arimathea, Anthony Quinn as Caiphas, Laurence Olivier as Nicodemus, Ernest Borgnine as the Centurion, and Claudia Cardinale as the Adulteress. Filmed in England, Tunisia and Morocco, Jesus of Nazareth was scripted by Zefferili, Anthony Burgess and Suso Cechi D'Amico. It originally aired in two 3-hour segments, telecast Palm and Easter Sunday of 1977 as part of NBC's Big Event anthology. Hal Erickson

Greatest Story Ever ToldGreatest Story Ever Told
All Movie Guide - Filmmaker George Stevens chose Monument Valley, Utah for his exterior sequences in The Greatest Story Ever Told, this ($20 million) adaptation of Fulton Oursler's best-selling book. The "Greatest Story" is, of course, the life of Jesus Christ, played herein by Max Von Sydow. The large supporting cast includes Dorothy McGuire as Mary, Claude Rains as Herod the Great, Jose Ferrer as Herod Antipas, Charlton Heston as John the Baptist, Donald Pleasence as Satan (identified only as "The Dark Hermit"), David McCallum as Judas Iscariot, Sidney Poitier as Simon of Cyrene, Telly Savalas as Pontius Pilate and Martin Landau as Caiaphas. Even Robert Blake as Simon the Zealot, Jamie Farr as Thaddaeus, and motorcyle-flick veteran Richard Bakalyan as Dismas, the repentant thief, are well-suited to their roles. Originally roadshown at 260 minutes, Greatest Story Ever Told was later available in a 195-minute version. Hal Erickson

King of Kings King of Kings -
All Movie Guide - One major film star referred to director Nicholas Ray as a "loser," because of Ray's alleged willingness to let his more temperamental actors walk all over him. Evidently, Ray had a very compliant and cooperative cast in King of Kings, inasmuch as the film emerged as one of the most disciplined Biblical epics ever made. Jeffrey Hunter is cast as Jesus Christ, delivering a wholly credible performance in this most taxing of roles (never mind the wags who referred to the film as "I Was a Teenage Jesus"). Siobhan McKenna is a radiant if somewhat overaged Mary; Hurd Hatfield offers a properly preening Pontius Pilate; Rip Torn portrays Judas more for the tragedy than the treachery; Robert Ryan (a personal favorite of Ray's) is one of the best John the Baptists you're ever likely to see; and Harry Guardino convincingly interprets Barabbas as a firebrand political extremist. The only false note in the casting is the MGM-dictated selection of teenaged Brigid Bazlen as Salome. The best aspect of the film is its handling of the days after the Resurrection; the "Jesus sightings" are offered as secondhand information, so as to retain some of the mystery inherent in the Scriptures. King of Kings was previously filmed in 1927 by Cecil B. DeMille, with a middle-aged H.B. Warner as Jesus. Hal Erickson

Veggie Tales: The Ballad of Little Joe - A Lesson in Trusting GodVeggie Tales: The Ballad of Little Joe - A Lesson in Trusting God
Barnes & Noble
The VeggieTales bunch offer another bonanza of faith-based food for thought as they tackle the "tricky" question "If God loves me, why do bad things happen?" Taking a cue from the reverently funny musical Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, Larry the Cucumber stars as Jacob's favorite son, whose great organizational ability and vest of many colors arouses the jealousy of his brothers (the French-accented peas). But Joseph's faith never wavers as he is abandoned by his scheming siblings, bought by desperados ("You'd better come to your senses," an Eagles-savvy Joseph inevitably cautions), and betrayed by a jealous pizza parlor singer in Dodge Ball City. Whether you see this 35-minute tale as a generous fleshing out of the Genesis passage or an abridgement of the Timothy Rice-Andrew Lloyd Webber musical, its theme of forgiveness hits the bull's eye. It wouldn't be VeggieTales without silly songs, and this one offers a ditty featuring the line, "If life makes you a lemon, have some more root beer," as well as a number entitled "Belly Button," featuring Larry as part of a boy band called Boys in the Sink.
